A baffled expression appeared on my face when I looked out the window and noticed we were pulling up to Stakkz’s apartment complex. I thought he was taking me home.
“We got some time to kill, so let’s just chill at my spot for a little bit,” Stakkz said as he pulled in front of his house and killed the engine.
“Babe, I need to go home and change.”
“Alright, I will take you there in a little bit,” he stated, pulling the keys from the ignition. “I got to talk to my mother about something any ways,” he informed me as he got out of the car.
I got out of the car too, walked into the apartment complex, and followed him down the corridors. He slid his keys in the door. His keys jingled, making music.
“Say hi to my mother.” He looked back at me.
I rolled my eyes, pursed up my lips, and said, “Mm hmm.” I stared at his back as he opened up the door and pushed it open. I didn’t have beef with his mother, but she was just annoying sometimes. She always acted as if her son was a little-ass boy, demanding his whereabouts, who he was hanging with, etc., and it was just annoying as fuck. He was twenty-one years old; he was grown in my eyes. I stepped in past the threshold, closed the door behind me, and locked it. It smells really good in here.
“What’s up, ma?” Stakkz walked into the kitchen and his sneakers squeaked across the clean floor. He kissed her on the cheek.
“Hey, baby.”
“Hi, Mrs. Williams.” I smiled, staring at her.
“Hey, Milan,” she said dryly as she stood in the kitchen, cooking.
“I’ll be upstairs in a minute,” Stakkz said.
I was already making my way upstairs. I ascended the stairs and noticed his younger sister lying on the bed, flat on her stomach with some purple beats on her ear, singing. Damn, she can really sing. I stood in the threshold of her bedroom, smiling, bobbing my head to the rhythm of her beautiful voice. I was in the zone, listening to her sing. I didn’t notice her giggling.
“Milan,” Cassie called my name out while pulling one earphone off her ear, smiling.
“Hey, my fault I was in the zone listening to your beautiful voice.” I chuckled, leaning against the door frame. “I never knew you could sing.”
“Yeah, I been singing since I was a little girl.” She smiled and started writing in her black and white composition notebook.
“Well, you got the talent, girl,” I assured her. “I’ll see you later.”
“Later.” She looked back up and smiled. She placed back on her beats and started singing.
I headed down the hall and opened up the door that led to my boyfriend’s room. I closed the door behind me. As I was walking in, I noticed a Victoria Secret bag across the room so I walked over and pulled out several items. I forgot I had these clothes here. I placed the clothes back into the bag and sat on the edge of my boyfriend’s bed.
